The day has come that we never thought we'd see...Abby's reflux has finally gone away.
It's so funny that it went away with so little fanfare. It's almost like one day we were struggling with constant spitting up, choking and medicine and then one day it was just gone. poof!!
When Abby was really little, it was so horrible. We just couldn't figure out what was going on with her. And since she was our first baby, we just had no idea what to do. The first moment we knew something was wrong was the second Saturday that she was home. She cried uncontrollably ... we were on the phone with the nurse line at 2am. But it still went undiagnosed.
After awhile Dr. Leonard diagnosed the reflux and suggested that we start propping her up at night, elevating her during feedings (which was very difficult while breastfeeding!) and making her sit still for 30 minutes after each feeding. Whew. That was hard...
But we did it. And it didn't get any better. It actually got worse. She started spitting up out of her nose and getting choked. And that was really scary. One morning she spit up out of her nose 3 times and I had to change her clothes about 5 times. All before lunch. So I called Dr Leonard and she said enough is enough. Let's do medicine. So we started the Prevacid.
That was at 7 weeks. And it was a life saver!!!!!
The medicine made it so that Abby wasn't miserable. It didn't stop the spitting up. It didn't stop the choking. It didn't stop the constant changes of clothes for Abby or me or Greg. But at least it stopped the tears. And we could handle everything else.
But now it's gone. And it's weird. I can't explain it. It was such a "normal" for us. So to have it go away is a little strange. Wonderful, don't get me wrong. But strange.
We no longer have to burp 15 times during feedings. We don't have to force her to be still. We don't have to prop her up. We don't have to go through a million changes of clothes and wash a million loads of laundry.
And the great thing.....
She can be a normal baby!!!!
We can move her around and not worry about getting puked on. She can wiggle and squirm without us freaking out because she may get choked. It's really awesome.
And we've stopped the medicine. Prevacid was a Godsend but we don't need it now. We have a normal eater!!!
We're just thrilled that it's over. Dr. Leonard told us it would happen this way. That it would just go away. That she would just outgrow it overnight. And she did.
YAY Abby!!!
